As NoHLA works to move health justice forward, we’re always working to protect past progress. Over the last decade, NoHLA and partners have successfully advocated for affordability protections for people who buy their own coverage through our state Exchange, WA Healthplanfinder. But with uncertainty looming in the elections, this progress is on the line.
Today, nearly 4 in 5 Washingtonians who buy their health coverage through our state exchange benefit from federal premium tax credits (PTCs) that reduce monthly premiums. During the pandemic, Congress expanded these PTCs, which helped 30% more Washingtonians gain coverage through WA Healthplanfinder.
But these enhanced PTCs are set to expire at the end of 2025. If Congress doesn’t act to reauthorize the enhanced PTCs in early 2025, an estimated 70,000 Washingtonians could lose coverage. And with rising premiums and a challenging state budget outlook, it will be even more important to maintain federal protections.
NoHLA is stepping up to help inform Congressional leaders about the impact of this important affordability protection, particularly for Washingtonians from rural areas or communities of color.
