NoHLA Board Member Spotlight: Eric González Alfaro

Eric González Alfaro is one of our newer board members, joining the NoHLA Board last fall. He had collaborated with Executive Director Janet Varon and admired her thoughtful and inclusive nature of always working to improve health systems from a holistic, consumer-centric standpoint. Eric was grounded by his upbringing – he was raised by undocumented farm workers who worked hard and made sacrifices to help Eric and his three equally successful siblings achieve the promise of the American Dream. As the Legislative and Policy Director for the Washington State Labor Council, AFL-CIO, Eric works on legislation that helps workers live better lives, on and off the job. He finds chairing the Healthy Washington and Farm Worker Coalitions to be humbling and worthwhile, no matter how difficult the challenge (though he acknowledges that the most difficult fights are the most personally rewarding). Eric is a single parent to about ten house plants – ranging from small succulents to nine-foot fiddle fig trees. He also enjoys gardening (and envisions starting his own CSA), plays music, enjoys cooking in his small kitchen, and is an aspiring fly fisherman.

Eric appreciates NoHLA’s commitment to ensuring all people access to affordable and quality care, regardless of immigration status or income, which has included protecting the Affordable Care Act from being dismantled. His commitment to NoHLA is “all about community and the type of world we want to live in. I want to make sure that we are making progress on our commitment that health care is a human right.” He wants to make sure that NoHLA has the needed support to tackle the big things with ample power!
