The Washington State Legislature secured the passage of paid family leave this legislative session. While this is not directly health care-related, it will have a significant impact on the health of families in our state. Washington State tinkered around the edges of paid family leave previously, but never figured out how to fund it. Family leave can be used to bond with a newborn or adopted child, or take care of a sick family member. Individuals will be able to take up to 12 weeks of paid leave for family caregiving and 12 weeks of paid medical leave, with a combined annual cap of 16 weeks of paid leave. For those with pregnancy-related health complications, the cap is extended to 18 weeks. It will be jointly funded by individuals and their employers. Families will see benefit from this policy change starting January 2020. Thanks to the legislators who championed this effort, and to our partners in the Washington Work and Family Coalition whose tireless and effective advocacy was essential to this achievement.
