County-Based Immigrant Coverage Proposal Gaining Steam in King County

In April, NoHLA released a new report with recommendations for a new approach to provide comprehensive health coverage to uninsured immigrants. County-based health coverage programs, modeled off of programs operating in other states, including California and Maryland, could close the coverage gaps that persist for adult immigrants. The proposal is picking up steam in King County, where NoHLA Attorney Huma Zarif presented to the King County Board of Health last week as a follow up to our presentation in February. Missed it but interested in learning more? You can watch the presentation here. The Board Chair recommended that the King County Council’s Health, Housing and Human Services Committee dive into the details next. Nearly 30 organizations and individuals signed on to a letter to the King County Board of Health, the King County Council and the Seattle City Council supporting NoHLA’s recommendation for a county-based health coverage program to provide comprehensive coverage to uninsured immigrants. The letter urges the adoption of a county-based coverage program in King County.
