The federal government has started rulemaking to restore critical civil rights protections in health care that were damaged by the Trump Administration. The Biden Administration is trying to shore up nondiscrimination protections under Section 1557 of the Affordable Care Act, but needs to hear from the public about why this is important.
NoHLA encourages you to show your support for §1557 of the ACA and its important protections against discrimination in health care programs and activities based on race, color, national origin (including limited English proficiency and primary language), sex (including pregnancy status and related conditions, sexual orientation, gender identity, sex stereotypes, and sex characteristics, including intersex traits), age, and disability.
Here’s an easy way for you to comment on the proposed rule changes. People who have experienced health care discrimination first-hand are encouraged to share their stories, in particular:
- LGBTQ+ folks, trans people, queer folk, and intersex people;
- Black, Indigenous, and People of Color;
- People with disabilities;
- Older adults and caregivers;
- Pregnant people, people who have had miscarriages and abortions;
- Non-English speaking people;
- LGBTQ+ Elders; and
- People at the intersection of multiple identities.
